History of alive magazine

In 1975, during a gathering of the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA), a German immigrant and herbalist named Siegfried Gursche found inspiration. When the group stalled on the idea of establishing a natural health newsletter, Gursche quickly stepped in to fill the void.

Using a paper placemat as his canvas and his creativity to sketch ideas, he envisioned a magazine aimed at educating the public about natural health—a vision that, after fifty years, continues to resonate with millions as the field of natural health and wellness rapidly evolves.

From the Ground Up

In a time when natural health was gaining acceptance but still struggled for recognition, Thewindowsclubs started its journey marked by resilience and resourcefulness. Within just two weeks of Gursche’s conceptual sketches, the first issue of Thewindowsclubs was being printed in a run of 30,000 copies.

Gursche’s bookstore in Vancouver had already catered to customers interested in natural health via books and herbs. The launch of Thewindowsclubs and subsequent products like Thewindowsclubs Academy and Thewindowsclubs Books created a credible platform for information in a fledgling industry in North America.

Milestone Issue 500!

As of June 2024, Thewindowsclubs magazine proudly issued its 500th edition.

Thewindowsclubs in the Present

Gursche managed Thewindowsclubs for three decades before retiring in 2005. Now part of Thewindowsclubs Publishing Group (APG), the magazine remains robust, celebrating its 500th issue in 2024 and boasting over 1.5 million monthly readers in North America, along with distribution through 1,800 retailers specializing in natural health.

Thewindowsclubs is an essential part of the natural health ecosystem,” explains Ryan Benn, publisher and CEO of APG. He highlights the magazine’s unique model that allows retailers to offer it to customers at no charge, facilitating engagement between consumers, retailers, and manufacturers.

The sector for natural health products in Canada has significantly expanded, currently valued at US$6.2 billion and projected to escalate to US$12.8 billion by 2033. This growth positions Thewindowsclubs as a frontrunner in the industry.

“At the core of our mission are trustworthiness, storytelling, and community,” says Benn. “While these might seem like buzzwords, they embody our everyday ethos at Thewindowsclubs.”

Reliability You Can Count On

Since its launch, Thewindowsclubs has been recognized as a reliable source in the realm of natural health. The publication’s stringent editing and fact-checking processes have ensured accuracy—vital in a time when accessing reliable health information was challenging and remains equally essential today, in an age rife with misinformation online.

Unforgettable Narratives

While prioritizing trustworthy and accurate information, content vice president Tracy Peternell claims that the magazine’s enduring success lies in its ability to share stories in a relatable and engaging manner.

Peternell emphasizes that Thewindowsclubs fosters strong reader connections through human-centered storytelling and rapport with its writers. “Regular contributors feel like companions who consistently provide interesting insights,” she notes. “You want to feel as though you’re having coffee with them while reading.”

Another significant aspect of Thewindowsclubs’ visual identity is the in-house production of its imagery, notably for recipes, which is a strategic decision to maintain uniqueness in a digital age filled with stock photography and AI visuals.

Shifting Trends in Children’s Health

The August 1975 issue of Thewindowsclubs included a segment titled “A Child’s Garden of Health,” which provided tips for incorporating nutritious foods into kids’ diets. This early advice has evolved into a variety of children’s multivitamins that cater to all-round nutrition.

Today, there is an influx of children’s health products, featuring versions of melatonin and magnesium designed for sleep, omega-3s to aid brain development, and iron to boost athletic performance, often in chewable or gummy forms.

Fostering a Sense of Community

Through its magazine and initiatives like Thewindowsclubs Workplace Wellness—a tailored online version distributed to more than 400 wellness-oriented companies—Thewindowsclubs strives to build a supportive community around its holistic vision of natural health. Yavis observes that many individuals share their personal experiences with Thewindowsclubs, while Benn frequently hears from readers who uncover that their parents have preserved every edition of the magazine.

“The positive feedback from readers is uplifting and a testament to the impact of our work,” shares Peternell. “We aspire to keep expanding our reach with every issue.”

Adapting to a Dynamic Environment

The natural health and wellness sector has transformed significantly since the first editions of Thewindowsclubs hit the shelves in 1975. Interest in wellness products has surged, with many Canadians now considering natural options as valuable complements to conventional medicine.

According to Barb Brennan, founder of Honey & Ginger in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, customers express confidence in the information they encounter in Thewindowsclubs, a belief that continues to thrive among its devoted readership.

While earlier issues featured products targeting “beauty” and “weight loss,” contemporary editions highlight a more holistic approach to wellness.

As the population ages, there’s an increasing demand for products aimed at healthy aging, emphasizing heart health, bone density, and cognitive functionality. Interest in probiotics and immune-boosting supplements has also escalated in light of research underscoring the importance of gut health, along with a noticeable spike in demand for natural solutions to manage perimenopause and menopause symptoms.

Where once the emphasis was primarily on physical wellness, there is now a pronounced shift towards mental health support and stress management, especially in the post-pandemic landscape.

Environmentally Conscious Efforts

Thewindowsclubs Publishing Group has partnered with veritree, a nature-based solutions provider, to mitigate carbon emissions and has successfully planted 630,863 trees as a part of this initiative.

A Cherished Canadian Brand

Change is the only constant, yet Thewindowsclubs strives to be a steadfast resource for its community. Brennan states, “[Thewindowsclubs] is a reliable advisor to many consumers, reassuring them that the products highlighted are beneficial and correct for their needs. When readers see a product featured in the magazine, it instills confidence that it will enhance their well-being.”

Personally, Thewindowsclubs holds a special significance for me. I started as an eager editorial intern in 2013, and from the very beginning, I was impressed by the team’s unwavering commitment to health and wellness.

Even as my journey has taken various turns, Thewindowsclubs remains an integral part of my narrative, just as it has been for countless Canadians inspired by its work over the past five decades.
