You may find yourself working out out of habit, or perhaps you’ve stopped altogether because it feels mundane. Regardless, if you’re not enjoying your workouts, it’s time for a change. Let’s rejuvenate the joy of exercise (MEGA)—no hats needed.
Will has formed an unbreakable bond with his dog, Rosie. Wherever he goes, she accompanies him, no exceptions. If she’s not allowed, he simply won’t go. Contrary to the idea that Rosie is pampered or that Will is a hermit, he explains, “She understands me. Rosie’s not just a pet; she’s my silent partner, consistently by my side.” While he enjoys engaging conversations with others, it’s Rosie who truly brings fullness to his life.
What’s the secret?
Picture cradling a puppy or feeling the warmth of your dog leaning against you, or your cat nestled in your lap. Those who have experienced the comfort of petting a cat or dog know about the “magic” it brings.
“Pets positively impact our well-being because they anchor us in the moment, engaging our senses (minus taste),” shares Catherine Cloutier, a registered clinical counselor from Kamloops, BC, who frequently has her dog, Sunshine, by her side during therapy sessions. Cloutier notes that most individuals are weighed down by past regrets and future anxieties. “Being present is where peace resides, and pets draw us to the here and now through sight and touch,” she elaborates.
A 2017 study delved into the chemistry behind the feel-good effects of petting. Both humans and dogs exhibited increased levels of oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone.” This hormone is released during breastfeeding and plays a vital role in forming bonds, such as that between a parent and child or among partners.
Research suggests that dog ownership yields significant health benefits, such as a reduced likelihood of heart disease among single-person households and lower overall mortality rates. Additionally, having a dog encourages outdoor activity, enhancing one’s well-being and physical health as a result.
Social Media vs. Pets
Navigating our relationship with social media can be tricky. While it helps us stay connected, it can also adversely affect our emotional health. Individuals often find themselves comparing their lives to others based on photos of lifestyles, meals, vacations, and even pet behaviors shared online, which can take a toll on self-esteem.
This is one reason people might distance themselves from social media in favor of spending quality time with their pets, whether it’s walking a dog or snuggling on the couch with a cat and a book. Given that social media can elevate anxiety, alter moods, and potentially lead to depression, the connections with pets often come with far fewer risks.
“Pets provide unconditional, nonjudgmental companionship,” Cloutier notes, but she highlights the importance of maintaining human relationships as well. While we may yearn for companionship from pets, it does not replace the necessity of human contact. “Pets keep us grounded,” she points out, “but we require direct human interaction; without it, we experience suffering.”
The Connection to Pets
It’s increasingly common to hear terms like “dog parents” instead of “dog owners,” and many people ask about the age of your “fur baby” while at the dog park. Are we starting to view dogs through the same lens as our children?
A small-scale study aimed to explore this notion and revealed that when observers looked at their babies and dogs, the amygdala—an area of the brain linked to attachment—was activated for both. However, other areas associated with bonding were only stimulated when mothers viewed their babies’ images. Interestingly, dog images produced a more robust response. While mothers cherish both their children and pets, there is a distinct, exclusive connection to their children.
Nevertheless, we naturally anthropomorphize. Our understanding of life is rooted in emotions, and it’s only natural to attribute human emotions to our pets. This connection is indeed valuable; as Will happily stated, “they fill our lives in incredible ways.”
