Although often associated with fall, apple pie can be reinvented with this delightful skillet method. Start by mixing Honeycrisp apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and a splash of lemon juice, then layer them between two pie crusts resting in a sweet mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon, finishing with a drizzle of caramel sauce for a decadent dessert that’s perfect for any evening.
Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce
4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon, divided
1 tablespoon lemon juice
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup plus 2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 refrigerated pie crusts
2 teaspoons whipping cream
caramel sauce
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
In a large bowl, mix together the apples, sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice until the apples are well coated. Set this mixture aside.
In a 10-inch oven-safe nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar and the remaining cinnamon; cook until bubbling, about 5 to 8 minutes.
Place one pie crust in the skillet over the brown sugar mixture. Add the apple filling on top, then cover with the second pie crust. Make several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Brush the crust with whipping cream and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust turns a beautiful golden brown.
Finish by drizzling with caramel sauce.
