Orange Juice Biscuits

Orange Butter Sauce:

1 1/2 cups Florida Orange Juice

2 1/2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

Orange Biscuits:

1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 teaspoons grated orange zest

2 cups bleached all-purpose flour, with more for kneading

1 2/3 tablespoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup whole milk

1/4 cup Florida Orange Juice

For the orange butter sauce, simmer the orange juice for 5 minutes, or until it reduces by half. Incorporate the butter and stir until melted, then remove from heat.

To prepare the orange biscuits, preheat your oven to 425°F.

Blend the sugar and zest together with your fingers until the sugar appears moistened and resembles wet sand.

In a large bowl, combine the orange sugar, 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt. Use either two forks or a pastry blender to cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles small peas.

Mix the milk and orange juice, then add to the flour blend to create a sticky dough.

Transfer the dough to a well-floured surface. Sprinkle the top with additional flour and knead around six times, folding the dough in half and adding flour as needed.

Roll out the dough to a thickness of 3/4 inch. Use a round cutter that has been dipped in flour to cut out biscuits, pressing straight down without twisting the cutter.

Arrange the biscuits on a baking sheet so they are close, but not touching.

Recombine the dough scraps, folding it 2-3 times, pat it out once more, and cut out additional biscuits. Continue until all the dough is utilized.

Brush the tops of the biscuits with the orange butter sauce. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are lightly golden.

Serve the biscuits warm or at room temperature, accompanied by the remaining sauce.
