Hollywood Balancing Act

Peter Jang, who refers to himself as a “multi-head,” has been challenging the status quo in Hollywood for more than ten years, taking on roles as an actor, stunt performer, screenwriter, and director.

Achieving notable accolades for his short film Mask, which he both acted in and directed, Jang secured the “Best Actor” award at the 2022 RED Movie Awards in Reims, France, and the “Best Narrative Short” award at the 2022 Marina Del Rey Film Festival. Through these successes, he is establishing his presence and promoting his production company, Simplicity Pictures, Inc., which he launched in 2016.

Before making his mark in Hollywood, Jang was raised in the vicinity of Columbus, Ohio. In his youth and throughout college, he excelled as a black-belt Taekwondo practitioner, clinching five national championships. Following high school, he relocated to California and obtained a degree in economics from the University of California, San Diego.

With his degree completed, Jang began his career as an actor and stunt performer, contributing to a variety of prominent projects, including NCIS Hawai’i, General Hospital, American Horror Stories, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Suicide Squad, Westworld, and more.

Influencing through Cinema

Despite the rigorous demands of his acting and stunt roles, Jang finds it effortless to maintain the enthusiasm and drive to sustain this lifestyle, stating, “because I genuinely enjoy it and recognize its significant impact.”

“Film possesses a unique enchantment, as it has the power to influence individuals,” he explains. “[It has the ability to] alter their perspectives on the world, improve their relationships, or even transform their lives.”

His aspiration to make a profound impact is exemplified in Mask, where Jang portrays a veteran grappling with symptoms of PTSD—a topic close to his heart, inspired by his mother’s journey as a veteran.

In a similar vein, his screenplay Simulation, which garnered a top 10 position in Filmmatic’s Drama Screenplay Awards, highlights the repercussions of technology on human connections. This tale unfolds in the near future, following a man who prepares for an ideal date by engaging in simulations that are virtually indistinguishable from reality.

Balancing Mind and Body

Jang’s path has been shaped by a personal ethos rooted in martial arts, promoting a balance between the mind, body, and nature. He advocates for the notion of a “balanced” individual, stating, “if you neglect your body, your mind cannot perform at its best.”

To Jang, a healthy lifestyle not only involves nutritious food and consistent exercise, but also includes soaking up sunlight each morning and evening to align his circadian rhythm with the natural environment’s cycles.

Although he aims to adhere to a disciplined lifestyle, there are occasions when he finds himself out of sync. “There’s little you can do to ward off those kinds of occurrences,” he notes.

A recent hurdle has arisen due to his parents’ health conditions. His father is facing challenges with rheumatoid arthritis and early-onset dementia, while his mother is experiencing anxiety and PTSD linked to her military service. Both parents have relocated to California to be closer to Jang.

Discipline as a Form of Self-Care

Due to his parents’ medical issues, Jang has faced personal challenges, saying, “I was encountering these issues in my life, leading to feelings of depression.” Consequently, he found himself less active and not prioritizing his nutrition.

While it’s tempting to react to stress with indulgent foods, binge-watching favorite shows, or sleeping in—something Jang admits to occasionally doing—the alternative approach may yield greater benefits.

“True self-care stems from being somewhat more disciplined,” he asserts, “especially during stressful times when you believe you’re out of time.”

Rather than opting for immediate gratification, he encourages taking the more challenging route—like choosing a nourishing meal instead of comfort food or stepping outside to embrace nature.

“These choices prove far more beneficial during particularly stressful periods in life,” he concludes.

Real-World Simulations

In the previous year, around 160,000 members of the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union engaged in a walkout lasting nearly four months over disputes with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). A key issue revolved around the utilization of AI within the entertainment sector.

The agreement reached in December provided some safeguards for union members—producers must now obtain consent before replicating actors’ likenesses using AI, and actors are required to be compensated for the creation and utilization of their digital replicas, though the rates differ.

Nonetheless, concerns linger regarding “vague” exceptions to these safeguards and the risk that the contract may still permit the replacement of real actors with “Synthetic Performers.” Despite these worries, the agreement has effectively normalized AI’s presence in the industry, with lasting implications.
