During her high school days, Sydney Dumler did not engage in traditional team sports, yet she yearned for a sense of community. To fulfill this desire, she embraced yoga and Pilates, which allowed her to connect with others while moving her body.
By the time she turned 18, Dumler’s enthusiasm for her practice led her to pursue teacher training in yoga. After receiving her certification, she moved to Nashville for college, where she took on the roles of manager and instructor at a yoga studio.
Recognizing the demand for more group fitness options in Tennessee, Dumler launched Forza Pilates in December 2023. In just a few years, she has successfully expanded her studio to include two locations, with a third on the horizon. Her dedication to Pilates is evident, but her strong commitment to her community is what truly sets her apart in the fitness industry.
The Impact of Positivity
The landscape of group fitness is evolving. Dumler notes that many individuals are seeking movement that enhances their overall wellness rather than solely focusing on their physical fitness. “The increasing popularity of Pilates is indicative of this shift,” she reflects. While intensive workouts will always be an option, the industry is beginning to acknowledge the necessity for low-impact routines. “People want accessible workouts that allow them to feel accomplished, enabling them to go about their day without feeling completely worn out,” Dumler points out.
To guarantee that each client feels acknowledged and supported, she personally gives tours to newcomers and provides high-level concierge service. The design of her studios aims to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, akin to home. To this end, she employs a friendly and personable staff, all with the intention of fostering an inviting space.
Inclusive for All
However, accessibility extends beyond merely offering low-impact workouts and a comforting studio environment. It involves creating an inclusive program. Dumler adheres to this principle by providing instruction that caters to both beginners and advanced practitioners through modifications. “All of our classes are designed for all levels, but we guide participants based on their individual goals,” she explains. “Every instructor is trained to offer variations in each exercise to either make it more supportive or challenging.”
A truly inclusive and accessible fitness culture also embraces body-positive language and provides safe spaces. Dumler is aware that individuals notice a significant difference in how they feel after participating in classes that foster a supportive environment. “People are becoming more conscious of this,” she observes. “We strongly encourage our instructors to avoid any language that implies earning or promotes negative mentalities.”
At Forza, Dumler has curated a selection of classes tailored to customer preferences. “We host monthly plus-size Pilates classes in collaboration with a local influencer,” she shares, highlighting the importance of relatability. “Having individuals in the room with similar body types helps people to feel accepted and safe in that environment. It’s essential for studios to create these opportunities.”
Dumler also recognizes that new parents can feel vulnerable and emphasizes the importance of community support for them. “Returning to the gym post-childbirth can be daunting, especially with the guilt associated with leaving your baby with someone else,” she explains. To assist, Forza offers a BYOB (Bring Your Own Baby) class that allows parents in Nashville to socialize while maintaining their health—physically and mentally.
The Strength of Community
Exercising in a group isn’t just enjoyable; it also has significant health benefits. Dumler has noticed that her clients are inclined to linger after classes to socialize, as this sense of belonging contributes positively to their well-being. “We strive to organize fun monthly community events,” she adds.
Studies have shown that individuals who participate in group fitness classes are more likely to stick with their workout routines compared to those who exercise alone. Knowing a friend or instructor is expecting you at class can serve as a powerful motivator, reducing the likelihood of skipping workouts.
Moreover, group fitness classes are more effective at alleviating stress than solo workout programs. Community plays a vital role in achieving a healthy lifestyle, and group classes allow participants to support and encourage each other, resulting in a more positive health outcome.
Discovering the Right Fit
Although group fitness classes offer numerous health benefits and are engaging, some individuals may still feel anxious about attending them. Dumler advises those apprehensive to start with online classes from home. This approach helps them familiarize themselves with the movements and terminology before stepping into an in-person session. “Eventually, you can gather the courage to attend a group class with a foundational knowledge, which can be very advantageous,” she says.
It’s essential to practice self-compassion and focus on fostering a positive mindset. “Feeling intimidated is perfectly normal,” Dumler acknowledges. “I certainly felt nervous the first time I attended Pilates. The key is to avoid pressuring yourself and to approach the experience with an open mind.”
