Improving Men’s Fertility

Infertility remains a significant issue for many couples, with male-related factors contributing to approximately half of all cases. Fortunately, various natural methods have been thoroughly researched and shown to enhance factors that influence sperm health.

Nutrition

The Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes a high consumption of fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, has been linked to better sperm motility. Men who followed this eating pattern exhibited an 11 percent increase in the number of progressively motile sperm compared to those who did not.

In another study, incorporating about half a cup of raw walnuts into a typical Western diet for a period of 12 weeks led to notable improvements in sperm morphology, motility, and vitality. This could be attributed to the high levels of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid found in walnuts.

Conversely, a diet rich in trans fats has been correlated with a decrease in sperm counts among otherwise healthy men, showing a reduction of roughly 50 percent in sperm numbers for those with high trans fat consumption.

Coenzyme Q10

Recent research involved administering 200 mg of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) daily for three months to infertile men suffering from oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) — a condition marked by low sperm count, reduced motility, and unhealthy sperm shape. This treatment led to increased levels of antioxidant enzymes in the semen, with higher CoQ10 levels correlating with a greater percentage of normally shaped sperm.

Another study observed that 200 mg of CoQ10 taken over 26 weeks could enhance sperm concentration, motility, and shape in men with OAT.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have also proven effective in improving sperm health. A randomized controlled trial with 238 men diagnosed with OAT revealed that those receiving either a placebo or about 2 grams of combined EPA and DHA for 32 weeks noted significant improvements in sperm count and concentration in the omega-3 group.

L-carnitine

Lastly, L-carnitine has received considerable attention for its role in enhancing sperm motility. In one study, participants taking 1 g of L-carnitine three times daily for three months showed improvements in the percentage of motile and normally shaped sperm. Another study found enhanced progressively motile sperm counts in men experiencing low motility when given L-carnitine.

Overall, targeted dietary choices and natural supplements such as CoQ10, omega-3 fatty acids, and L-carnitine have shown promise in positively influencing male fertility parameters.
