Dancing into spring, shaking off the winter

Residents of Canada, regardless of their usual cheerfulness and fortitude, are well aware of the impact winter’s gloom can have on mental health. As March approaches, the anticipation for spring becomes palpable—and engaging in dance might just be the perfect way to bring that seasonal warmth a bit closer.

Everyone’s Invited

Feeling like you can’t dance? It’s time to reconsider. Dancing is a fundamental aspect of human experience; even babies express themselves through movement and rhythm prior to verbal communication.

According to Julia Ray, founder of Ecstatic Dance Toronto, a weekly alcohol-free dance gathering, “Dance is movement, and movement is something inherent to us.” If concerns about appearing “cool” are preventing you from joining in, the myriad health benefits of dancing might just motivate you to step onto the dance floor.

The Cognitive Benefits of Dance

Research confirms that even a single hour of dancing can significantly alleviate symptoms of depression. While like other forms of physical activity, it raises endorphin levels, the benefits of dancing extend beyond that.

Given the deep connection between music and movement, combining them creates a rewarding experience: the anticipatory nature of music activates the brain’s reward systems, while dance engages sensory and motor pathways. This dual stimulation is why dancing can produce prolonged feelings of pleasure, prompting some to dance until dawn.

Supporting Cognitive Health

Dancing has also been shown to lower the chances of developing dementia and can aid individuals with Parkinson’s disease by enhancing dopamine levels and fostering the creation of new neural pathways that promote neuroplasticity. For Parkinson’s patients, a consistent rhythmic stimulus can improve their mobility, while specific songs may help evoke memories for individuals with dementia.

Dance as a Form of Therapy

Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) integrates movement and dance as a unique therapeutic modality offering patients alternative avenues for expression.

“Every experience we have is physically embodied,” shares Marlene Stirrett-Matson, a dance movement therapist and president of the Dance and Movement Therapy Association in Canada. “These experiences manifest as memories and traumas within our bodies, and we collaborate with clients to reveal and work through these memories using movement.”

By not relying solely on verbal communication, DMT allows individuals to tap into unconscious emotions, overcome cultural and linguistic barriers, and process complex issues more effectively.

Building Physical Strength

Aside from the mental advantages, dancing offers a fantastic way to stay active, even amid snowy conditions. Research has demonstrated that engaging in dance—whatever the style—can significantly enhance muscular strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance.

Continue Moving

Dance provides considerable advantages for maintaining physical fitness as we age, helping to retain mobility, support healthy joints, and promote holistic well-being.

For individuals with mobility challenges, dance remains an accessible option. When organizing a session, “you can rely on the movements present in the room,” explains Stirrett-Matson. “Participants can engage in dance while seated, standing, or lying down—wherever they feel safest and most at ease.”

Fostering Community

When dancing alongside others—be it in a group environment or with a partner—the benefits extend beyond the individual experience to include shared joy and connection. Moving together not only synchronizes energy and emotional states but also strengthens social ties and transforms wellness into a collective journey.

“Dance is such a potent elixir… inherently linked to health and wellness,” remarks Ray. “We are born equipped with everything necessary to thrive, and the dance floor exemplifies one of those vital spaces.”
