“Dance is simply movement, and we are constantly moving,” states Julia Ray, the creator of Ecstatic Dance Toronto, a weekly dance gathering free from alcohol. “Your body is familiar with this.” If you find yourself hesitating due to worries about appearing “cool,” the numerous health advantages it offers may encourage you to hit the dance floor.

Research has shown that just one hour of dancing can significantly lower depression levels. Like any physical activity, it triggers the release of endorphins, but there is more to the story.

“Our bodies hold every experience we’ve ever had,” explains Marlene Stirrett-Matson, a dance movement therapist and president of the Dance and Movement Therapy Association in Canada. “These experiences, whether traumatic or joyful, are retained within our physical selves. Through movement, we assist clients in exploring and processing these memories.”

The non-verbal nature of DMT connects patients to deep-seated emotions, bypassing cultural and language barriers, allowing them to address complex feelings that might otherwise be hard to express.
