Nest mode for the dark months ahead

As winter approaches, various creatures and plants adapt in unique ways—bears enter hibernation, many plants become dormant, and even hummingbirds reduce their activity. Humans can find valuable lessons from these natural cycles! During the shorter and darker days, we have the opportunity to infuse our surroundings with warmth and solace. By making small adjustments to our living spaces and daily habits, we can enhance our overall well-being.

Feeling down?

If you find yourself feeling low during the fall and winter months, you are certainly not alone. Glenda Wallace, MA, RCC, explains, “Reduced sunlight exposure can lead to an increased likelihood of depressive moods. In simple terms, more sunlight results in greater neurotransmitter levels, which boost our mood. Conversely, more darkness increases melatonin, leaving us feeling lethargic and sluggish. This feedback loop can lead to overeating, oversleeping, and a decline in outdoor activities, ultimately fostering a negative cycle.”

Wallace notes that the lack of light can also impact our metabolism. “Your brain communicates with your body to conserve energy, leading to a slower metabolism and heightened hunger,” she adds.

A Path to Wellness

According to Wallace, there’s encouraging news: “We can proactively cultivate healthy habits in our daily lives.” Wallace shares the following suggestions:

  • Getting outside for daily sunlight (at least 30 minutes if possible) or using light therapy boxes.
  • Participating in regular exercise, which can boost endorphin levels.
  • Consuming a balanced diet (consult your healthcare provider regarding potential vitamin D supplementation).
  • Managing stress, which might involve therapy or medication.
  • Establishing a personalized routine that incorporates activities you love.

Creating a Cozy Environment

Beyond maintaining healthy habits, we can also learn from bears and craft our own comforting space. Here are some suggestions:

  • Declutter and organize your space. For many, a tidy environment contributes positively to mental wellness.
  • Opt for soothing colors. This choice is subjective, but numerous individuals find green to be calming, possibly due to its association with nature.
  • Utilize aromatherapy; certain scents like lavender promote relaxation, while others such as citrus provide energy.
  • Bring nature indoors with houseplants or natural elements like pinecones.
  • Design a cozy reading space with soft throws and a comfortable chair.
  • Create a coffee or tea station in the kitchen (hot chocolate for the little ones!).

Embracing Hygge

The Danish concept of hygge, which translates to “coziness,” is a way to navigate through the cold, dark months. Wallace notes that “anything that enhances feelings of comfort, snugness, community, and contentment is valued.” She adds, “One of my favorite winter activities involves transforming a space into a warm haven by lighting candles or enjoying a cozy fire while inviting friends over for tea and conversation.”

Wallace emphasizes simplicity: “It’s essential to appreciate the positive aspects of life and revel in the little joys that everyday moments provide. Taking time for yourself and your loved ones can foster tranquility, lessen stress, and elevate your mood.”
