Summer lifestyle preparation

Summer has finally arrived! This season invites us to pause and enjoy the warmth of the sun. However, many of us tend to overpack our schedules with weekend activities and ambitious personal objectives, only to find ourselves reflecting on how quickly summer slipped away by Labour Day weekend!

What if we decided to release our expectations and rigid schedules to fully relish the gift of the present moment?

Envision a summer characterized by simplicity, where we find happiness in the elemental aspects of our existence: sunlight, fresh air, nourishment, and hydration. Let’s take a lesson from nature, allowing ourselves to slow down and appreciate the wealth of resources offered by this vibrant season.

Use this summer wellness guide to rejuvenate your daily routine.

Indulge in Fresh Fare

As Canadians, we joyfully embrace summer, in part due to its abundance of fresh produce. Seasonal foods are nutrient-rich and encourage us to align our diet with nature’s offerings.

Harvesting

Nothing compares to the joy of basking in the sun while gathering tomatoes or fresh herbs to make a salad. Tending to a garden can empower you and foster a deeper connection to the earth (more on ‘earthing’ momentarily!).

For those with limited space, consider a vertical garden on your balcony or potted herbs indoors to add flavor to your meals.

If gardening isn’t your forte, you can still enjoy locally sourced produce by visiting a farmers’ market or joining a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, which delivers weekly baskets of fresh goods from local growers.

Research indicates that involvement in a CSA can enhance vegetable preference, exposure, and overall consumption.

Relishing

Regardless of how you acquire your food, the act of preparing and sharing meals carries its own significance.

Engaging in food preparation, such as shucking corn or dicing vegetables, can help alleviate stress and anxiety. Cooking together with family nurtures appreciation for meals and fosters gratitude, thereby enhancing overall family welfare.

Emphasizing the experience of savoring beyond food—such as time spent with loved ones or enjoying nature—will increase the rewards of summer: the act of savoring is linked to stronger interpersonal relationships and greater contentment in life.

Embracing Nature

Forge a connection with nature and allow it to nurture your mind, body, and soul.

Grounding/Earthing

Simply going barefoot on grass or sand can work wonders.

The electrical connection established when our bodies touch the earth has led to various research studies on its health benefits. Advocates of grounding suggest it can enhance circulation, sleep quality, and overall energy, while fostering a sense of well-being.

They also assert it could alleviate pain, aid healing, and support treatment for chronic inflammation and autoimmune disorders.

Negative Air Ions (NAI)

The invigorating sensation at the beach is no accident!

NAIs, which are negatively charged gas ions produced by sunlight and vegetation, are prevalent in areas like beaches, waterfalls, and forests. They are believed to enhance air quality and can benefit health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Exposure to NAIs has been linked with diminished symptoms of depression.

This summer, as you swim in natural waters, take a deep breath of those negative air ions. Swimming is also superb exercise for those dealing with lower back pain and arthritis, as it alleviates pressure on the joints.

Forest Bathing

Take a leisurely stroll through the forest or enjoy a picnic under the trees.

The Japanese tradition of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is shown to drastically decrease cortisol levels, alleviating stress substantially. This practice can also lead to lower blood pressure, increased heart rate variability, enhanced metabolic function, and an uplifted mood.

Sun Exposure

Welcome the warmth of the sun this summer.

Getting adequate sunlight is linked to enhanced mental well-being. Increased sunlight hours during the summer can help your circadian rhythm align with solar time, helping regulate your sleep-wake pattern. Nature-based light exposure during a weekend camping trip can shift your circadian rhythm by nearly 70 percent.

Additionally, it’s crucial for our skin to receive enough sun to synthesize adequate levels of vitamin D. Those residing in northern regions may often require vitamin D supplementation.
