Revolutionize your organization

An efficiently arranged home can greatly enhance daily living—for both body and mind. By minimizing allergens and hazardous substances indoors, as well as reducing stress and fostering better sleep, small adjustments in space management can positively influence overall health and well-being.

We consulted with professionals to discover how altering your surroundings can bring about personal transformation. Whether you’re remote working, parenting, or seeking tranquility, these straightforward organizational techniques can elevate your mental and physical state.

The connection between health and home

“Clutter represents unresolved choices and can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and overwhelm,” explains Lisa Morton, a holistic interior designer and feng shui expert. “While your possessions might symbolize comfort and security, looking at them through an energetic perspective—like feng shui—might reveal limitations.”

Persistent stress can weaken your immune system, making it more difficult to fend off illness, enjoy restful sleep, and stay motivated. When your living space is calm and organized, it encourages relaxation within your nervous system, resulting in a cascade of health benefits.

Trista Best, a Registered Dietitian at Balance One Supplements, points out that cluttered high-traffic zones, like kitchens, can adversely affect eating habits. “By organizing your refrigerator, you can avoid food waste, prevent cross-contamination, and ease anxiety while simultaneously enhancing your diet,” Best remarks.

Begin with small steps: one room, one habit

Avoid the common pitfall of attempting to declutter and organize your entire home in one day. Focus on a smaller area, such as your bedroom or kitchen, and gradually implement changes from there.

“The biggest mistake we observe is trying to tackle everything simultaneously, which often leads to feelings of overwhelm and paralysis, preventing progress,” warns holistic interior designer Gala Magriñá. “We advise taking gradual, manageable steps—starting with a closet.”

Even minor tasks, like sorting an overflowing junk drawer or organizing a tight front closet, can subtly influence your energy. Dedicating just ten minutes to tidy a specific area can result in improved mental clarity and a decrease in stress.

Naturopathic doctor Renee Young encourages a day-by-day approach. “Commencing with the kitchen or entryway will help establish order in your home’s most frequented areas,” she suggests. “A clean, intentional entryway sets a calming tone for the rest of your home.”

Establish daily routines

An organized environment fosters positive habits. For instance, designate specific locations for daily wellness activities, such as a meditation nook, reading corner, or a supplement station in the kitchen.

“Organizing your area is not about achieving perfection or aesthetics; it centers around your intentions,” Morton emphasizes. “With genuine intention, the energy you dedicate to your home can extend to all aspects of your life.”

No need for expensive furnishings or elaborate equipment; simply create a space that promotes calmness and consistency. Include visual reminders for your healthy routines, like placing a yoga mat near your bed or keeping a basket of herbal teas close to the kettle.

Consider concluding your day with a brief tidying ritual by returning items to their rightful places, clearing dishes, or wiping counters. These minor habits can cue your mind and body that it’s time to wind down for the day, promoting relaxation and better sleep.

Viewing your home as a reflection

Your living space mirrors your inner life, and modifying it can influence how you perceive yourself.

“Our homes reflect our self-image,” clarifies Morton. “The central area of the house is linked to health and wellness. By decluttering and organizing, we show ourselves some appreciation.”

This is particularly relevant during stressful times or seasonal shifts when we tend to stay indoors more often and may feel vulnerable to low spirits or exhaustion. Creating a supportive home environment can significantly enhance your energy levels.

“Your home should function as a vital self-care asset, requiring the same level of commitment and attention we give to fitness and nutrition,” Magriñá asserts.

Studies reveal that implementing small, purposeful steps to organize your surroundings not only tidies your home but also lays the groundwork for improved health, mood, and peace of mind.
