Dancing into spring, shaking off the winter

In Canada, even the most positive individuals can feel the impact of the long, dreary winter months on their mental health. By the time March arrives, the excitement for spring is palpable, and engaging in dance may be the perfect way to invite some warmth into our lives a bit earlier.

Believe you can’t dance? Think again! Dance has always been a fundamental aspect of human expression; even babies convey their feelings through movement before they learn to speak.

“Dance is simply movement, and we are always moving,” indicates Julia Ray, the founder of Ecstatic Dance Toronto, which hosts a weekly sober dance event. “Your body instinctively understands how to engage in this expression.” If concerns about appearing “cool” are causing hesitation, consider the compelling health benefits that may just inspire you to hit the dance floor.

Brain Benefits of Dance

Research indicates that just one hour of dancing can significantly lower depression levels. While it releases endorphins similar to many other forms of exercise, its effects go even further.

The combination of music and dance acts as a double boost of pleasure: the anticipatory nature of music activates the brain’s reward system, while dance engages sensory and motor pathways. This dynamic pairing results in prolonged enjoyment, prompting many to dance for hours on end.

Dancing has also been shown to help reduce the likelihood of dementia and assist those with Parkinson’s disease by enhancing dopamine levels and creating new neural pathways that promote neuroplasticity. Individuals with Parkinson’s tend to improve their walking and speech patterns with rhythmic cues, and specific songs can evoke memories in individuals with dementia.

Therapeutic Dance

Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a therapeutic approach that integrates motion and dance to give clients a unique method of expression.

“Every experience we have is held within our bodies,” explains Marlene Stirrett-Matson, a dance movement therapist and president of the Dance and Movement Therapy Association in Canada. “These memories and traumas are stored there. We collaborate with clients to access and process these memories through movement.”

Because it transcends verbal communication, DMT allows patients to tap into unconscious emotions, overcome cultural and language barriers, and address challenges that are often hard to verbalize.

Beyond the cognitive benefits, dancing is an excellent way of maintaining physical activity, even when snow covers the paths outside. Research has demonstrated that various dance styles can substantially enhance strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance.

Dancing is also adaptable for those with mobility challenges. When organizing a dance session, “you can adjust the movements to suit everyone in the room,” notes Stirrett-Matson. “People can participate from a seated, standing, or lying position, based on what feels safe and comfortable for them.”

Engaging in dance with others, whether in a collective environment or with a partner, generates connections that extend beyond the individual. Together, dance fosters joy, belonging, and mutual support. Synchronizing movements can elevate energy levels, enhance mood, and transform wellness into a shared journey.

“Dance serves as a powerful, natural catalyst for health and wellness,” emphasizes Ray. “We possess all the necessary tools to flourish, and the dance floor is a space that illustrates this beautifully.”
