In the previous year, the number of individuals relying on food banks reached unprecedented levels across Canada. This year, Kirstin Beardsley, CEO of Food Banks Canada, affirms that this trend persists. She describes food insecurity as a “silent crisis” that touches all communities, highlighting the crucial function that food banks fulfill in society. Together, we have the power to effect change.
Growing Food Insecurity
Despite unemployment rates being close to a historical low, approximately 7 million Canadians are experiencing hunger, including many children.
“We’re consistently breaking records,” Beardsley states. Traditionally, food banks were utilized mainly by individuals without income or on fixed incomes. The profile of food bank users has shifted significantly.
“An increasing number of first-time users are seeking assistance,” she notes. “Many individuals are struggling to make ends meet due to rising costs. We see people with jobs facing difficult choices between paying rent, buying school supplies and clothing for their children, and putting food on the table.”
Nourishment for Today and a Brighter Tomorrow
Consider the food bank not merely as a source of groceries for those in need but as an agent for positive transformation.
“Our goal is to alleviate hunger both now and in the future,” explains Beardsley. This includes advocating for measures that can reduce the number of individuals needing assistance from food banks in the long run, ultimately fostering a Canada that everyone can take pride in.
“We must evaluate the impact of hunger and food insecurity on society,” Beardsley emphasizes. Studies indicate that hunger and malnutrition can adversely affect children’s capacity to learn, develop, and prosper. These detrimental effects extend to adults as well.
“It represents a lost opportunity for us as a nation,” she adds, highlighting that addressing significant issues like climate change necessitates our best efforts. “When one is dealing with hunger, they are not operating at their full potential. We are doing ourselves a disservice by not prioritizing the welfare of our society.”
“This is an urgent issue, but we must also tackle its underlying causes,” Beardsley suggests, highlighting the essential role that food banks play in advocating for local and national governments to confront the root factors of food insecurity.
Seeking Assistance and Supporting Others
Food banks aspire to eliminate their need for existence, and this is where your involvement is crucial.
“When a significant number of people engage with their local representatives, making food insecurity an electoral issue, it opens more doors for food banks to collaborate with policymakers and create initiatives that address the fundamental issues behind food insecurity,” Beardsley emphasizes.
“I encourage individuals to recognize how close they are to this issue and understand that it influences their lives, even if they might not see it directly,” she continues.
“Gain knowledge about the situation. Understand the extent of the challenges. Discuss it within your circles, whether in school committees, community gatherings, or with local and federal leaders. We need more people to acknowledge this critical issue.”
If you find yourself in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to seek help. There is no shame in reaching out.
“Food banks exist nationwide to support our community,” says Beardsley. “It takes great courage and strength to ensure that you and your family receive what you need.”
