With three daughters who are all under five, unicorns have become an integral element of my daily life. These magical beings also highlight the rarity of true uniqueness (especially outside the realm of Equestria) and emphasize the mental and physical effort required to embrace one’s individuality in a world where the urge to fit in is so prevalent.
Unicorn versus chameleon
A crucial step toward self-actualization—achieving a core balance in life—starts with distinguishing between the external expectations placed on you and the authentic growth and milestones that resonate with your personal values. This differentiation is akin to recognizing the difference between a chameleon that adapts to its environment and a unicorn that proudly stands out.
Reflect on your aspirations and objectives. Are they truly representative of your dreams and values, or are they merely influenced by societal pressures? For individuals finding it challenging to establish balance, Thais Aratangy from the Canadian Mental Health Association recommends, “spending more time with yourself.”
According to Aratangy, “The more you know yourself, the better you will understand your genuine likes and values, which will aid in determining what matters to you.” This, in turn, empowers you to create and uphold boundaries concerning your life priorities.
It’s you, only better
What does your optimal self look like? The three foundations essential to all aspects of your life are: sleep, movement, and nutrition.
Sleep
Sleep acts as a restorative element for both our bodies and minds. Research indicates that less than seven hours of sleep each night is categorized as “deprivation,” which can adversely affect your mental and physical well-being. Establish a calming bedtime routine to improve your sleep quality.
Movement
Unicorns are famous for their exhilarating gallops. While you don’t need to run at full speed (unless you choose to—no judgment here), incorporating regular physical activity is essential. Discover a form of movement that brings you happiness, whether it’s dancing freely or engaging in yoga with fellow enthusiasts.
Food
Feed your body with nutritious foods that energize you. Remember, your inner unicorn thrives on vibrant and wholesome meals (save bland options for your utility wear).
Supplements
Even unicorns sometimes need a bit of extra sparkle. Consult with a healthcare expert to see if supplements can assist you in meeting your unique requirements. Keep in mind that they are intended to enhance, not replace, your foundational health practices.
The magic of mindset and self-belief
A positive mindset, coupled with unwavering self-belief, transforms challenges into opportunities. This doesn’t blind you to the reality of life’s difficulties; rather, it equips you with the ability to look beyond immediate problems to find creative solutions, all while recognizing that circumstances could always be worse (thus fostering gratitude).
Begin your day by reaffirming your own worthiness. Such affirmations will support you in believing in yourself as if you were the last unicorn on the planet. Though self-doubt may occasionally creep in, you can counter it with positive affirmations, mindfulness practices, or by seeking guidance from a mental health professional.
Behaviour patterns: Notice and name
As you pursue the best version of yourself, be vigilant about the habits that may impede your progress. Recognizing the triggers that lead you to procrastination or self-sabotage is essential.
Do you often eat while watching TV (engaging in mindless eating) or check your phone instead of starting your day with intention? When you identify these patterns, document them and seek alternatives that align with your goals.
Instead of solely concentrating on eliminating negatives (like decreasing fast food intake), aim to incorporate positives (such as including a fruit or vegetable in every meal). Gradually, these beneficial actions will overshadow the less desirable habits, allowing them to fade away organically and with less resistance. Consistent, small positive shifts can accumulate into substantial improvements.
Let it go
There are times when we all feel as though we’ve faltered in our journey of self-improvement. What sets a unicorn apart from the herd is the ability to rise again and continue moving forward. It’s essential to release any past “failures” or perceived inadequacies.
Registered psychologist Dr. Bea Mackay emphasizes that, “To let go of regrets, you need to look at things differently. This can be achieved by forging new neural connections.”
This concept lies at the heart of cognitive behavioural therapy: retraining your mind and body to respond differently to past events or memories.
Rather than fixating on what has happened, leverage those experiences as stepping stones towards a brighter future. Each challenging moment has contributed to your personal development. Accept your imperfections, as they are integral to your growth journey.
The power of friendship
One of the key lessons from all My Little Pony narratives is the essential value of friendship. Having a solid support network is vital. In fact, it may be one of the most significant determinants of achieving your aspirations and sustaining positive changes.
Mackay posits that “friends and families who maintain healthy outlets for the natural tensions that arise in relationships, such as participating in sports, games, singing, or engaging in creative activities, tend to thrive in life more than those who do not.”
Surround yourself with individuals who inspire you. “Acknowledging that you can’t do everything alone,” suggests Aratangy, “will enable you to progress further.”
Engaging in daily reflection is crucial for personal learning and self-regulation. It serves as an essential tool for self-assessment, facilitating the integration of new knowledge with existing understanding and allowing for a comprehensive examination of one’s experiences.
There are various ways to reflect; how you go about it is entirely up to you. Any activity that encourages focusing on a specific thought while considering its aspects qualifies as reflection. This could range from structured journaling or using digital feeling-tracking applications to more physical pursuits like meditation, or even informal settings like having tea with a friend.
The key is to dedicate time to contemplate, assess, document, and articulate your daily experiences and how they relate (or don’t) to your current objectives and life aspirations.
Henry Ford’s assertion not only speaks to mindset but also reflects on the importance of self-esteem.
While numerous definitions exist for self-esteem, a succinct one provided by American sociologist Morris Rosenberg is: “Self-esteem is an indicator of self-acceptance, self-respect, and satisfaction with oneself.”
Your self-esteem influences every aspect of your life—from your willingness to embrace new challenges to your perceptions of your own talents and shortcomings, as well as your outlook for the future.
Self-esteem can fluctuate from day to day and can vary across different environments. Research demonstrates that various cognitive-behavioral therapies can significantly foster improvements in your self-esteem.
Therefore, if you find yourself needing a shift in perspective or believe you could benefit from additional support to create lasting changes this year, consider consulting a mental health professional to explore possibilities. You won’t regret it!
