Mission News blends an old-school newspaper look with modern responsive web design.
Modeled after The New York Times, this theme has a classic design that many visitors will feel right at home with. Despite the vintage design, Mission News adapts comfortably to all modern devices. You can load the demo site on your phone your resize your browser window to see how the design accommodates all screen sizes.
As a theme for news websites, it’s important for Mission News to support vast quantities of content. The triple column layout provides tons of space to feature posts from various categories, advertisements, and live updates from social feeds. In addition, there is a built-in search bar in the header that will allow visitors to quickly pull up articles on any topic you’ve covered in the past.
Customizable Styles
Mission News comes with plenty of options to customize your site.
First off, there are a huge amount of layout options. The center column filled with your latest posts can be styled in one of four different designs. In addition, the overall layout of the site has nine options to choose from. You can even choose layouts for specific pages and page types. That means you could use a left sidebar for all of your posts, no sidebar for your pages, and leave both sidebars on for just one particular post. You’ll also get these same options for WooCommerce and bbPress forum pages if you install either plugin.
Mission News also includes an assortment of display options in the Customizer for changing your post excerpt length, hiding any element on the site, and adding icons to the header for your social media profiles.
There’s also a Recent Posts Extended widget that comes bundled in the theme. It’s similar to the default Recent Posts plugin, but with added content and style options.
Professional Typography
While Mission News features images prominently for every post, typography is the key to a sharp news site design.
The high-contrast Abril Fatface font used for the site title is reminiscent of the gothic blackletter fonts used by traditional newspapers, but with a modern and elegant twist. Likewise, the PT Sans and PT Serif fonts have been designed with digital use in mind.
Mission News can be translated into any language and this is an important feature of the Russian-designed PT Sans and PT serif typefaces. As multi-lingual fonts, they’ve been created to serve a wide variety of character sets making them usable for many languages.
